leanda xavian is a calligrapher and letterer based in surrey, u.k.
After many years working as a graphic designer, with prestigious clients both in London and Athens, I dropped a full-time career following the birth of my son in 2010. I set up my first home studio designing typographic prints for my Etsy shop and stationery for American company Minted. Much of my work featured fonts that had a hand-drawn feel which inspired me to investigate learning copperplate and pointed pen calligraphy. After a period of intense study The Fine Letter Co. was founded in the summer of 2015.
I work on a variety of projects from wedding invites and stationery to promotional events and branding. My clients have included Burberry, Jo Malone, Molton Brown, Mappin & Webb, The International Yacht Register, Ginger Ray, Tatler, Bombay Gin, and Ferrero Rocher.
Not only have I introduced many people the art of beautiful writing through my regular workshops at Surrey Art School and Made & Making, but I am constantly honing my craft by studying with skilled calligraphers and master penmen. I am a member of the Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society and the South London Lettering Association and a founding contributor on calligrafile.com, the world’s largest online resource for calligraphers and hand-letterers. You can read more about me in this interview conducted by Molly Suber Thorpe for Calligrafile.
When I’m not at my desk I enjoy textile crafts such as crochet or macrame, painting, baking with my son, gardening and visiting exhibitions. With a Greek husband, I am a keen grecophile and spend as much time as I can in Greece each year, a place we one day hope to return to permanently.
